There is an alternate world. It is the world of Magic, where the two courts of Fairies, Day and Night, rule everything. The Day Court fairies thrive on all that is good and pure; the Night Court thrive on despair and chaos. The endless battle between these two Courts is affected by the state of affairs in the human world. The joy in the world fuels the Day Court's magic, and the Night Court is strengthened by the sorrow on Earth. For centuries the two courts have battled, knowing of Earth's existence and it's affect on their powers, but unable to intervene in the affairs of humankind.

All of this changes when, in the course of a battle, the Day and Night court discover a legendary relic--the Warrior's Shield. This magical shield bears a crest with two standard bearers, a knight and an enchantress, and gives the faeries the power to transport themselves to the human world to sow happiness or sorrow--and to recruit human soldiers into their war.

As each side tried to capture the shield for themselves, it was cleft in twain. One half bore the instructions to create the super-powered knights known as kishinen; the other half bore only the instructions to create the enchantresses, the mahoujo. Very few adolescent humans can become mahoujo or kishinen--a fairy can know them instantly by their ability to see the fairies.

As each side pours into the human world to recruit warriors to their side, young girls from all over the world soon find themselves enlisted in a battle to save the happiness of the Night Court's human targets...
